Jeep Cherokee power transfer unit may fail, rollaway risk

NHTSA campaign 25V011000 · Reported 2025-04-29 · Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)

high How serious is it? About this label

This is serious — losing drive power can cause a crash, and a Jeep that rolls away when parked can injure someone, so have it fixed promptly and use the parking brake in the meantime.

What's wrong, in plain English

A part called the power transfer unit, which helps send power to the wheels, can become damaged. If it breaks, it can disconnect the transmission from the differential. That means the car may lose power and stop moving while you are driving. It also means Park may not actually hold the vehicle, so the Jeep could roll away on its own after you get out. A dealer will update the software and replace the part if it needs it.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Cherokee is covered.
2. Contact your Jeep dealer or FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and mention recall number 01C.
3. Schedule the software update and part replacement — it is free of charge.
