The part that sends power to the wheels, called the power transfer unit, can break on certain Jeep Cherokees. If it fails, the vehicle may suddenly lose the ability to move under its own power, or it may roll away on its own even when you think it is parked. Chrysler is still finalizing the full fix. Dealers will update the drivetrain and electronic parking brake software, and replace the power transfer unit if needed, at no cost.

The plug that connects the right-side curtain airbag was not pushed in and secured properly. That is the bag which drops down over the right-side windows in a side crash or rollover. With a loose connection, the airbag may not go off when it is needed. Because of this the vehicles do not meet the federal rules for side impact protection and for keeping people from being thrown out. A dealer secures the connector at no charge.

After you finish a turn, your blinker is supposed to click off by itself. On some 2022 Jeep Cherokees, it may not. That means the signal can keep flashing while you are driving straight, or act in ways other drivers do not expect. When your blinker does not match what you are actually doing, drivers around you cannot tell which way you plan to go, and that can cause a crash. Dealers will check the steering column control module and replace it if needed.

On some 2021 Jeep Cherokees, the hose that carries transmission fluid to the cooler was not made correctly at the factory. The rubber was not cured the right way, so the hose can leak. A transmission fluid leak raises the risk of a fire. A dealer will inspect the hose and replace it at no charge. Because fire is involved, this one should not wait; get it looked at as soon as you can.

On certain 2021 Jeep Cherokee Latitude and Limited models, one or both of the front lower control arms — the metal arms that hold the front wheels in place — can crack and break while you are driving. If that happens, you can lose the ability to steer, with no warning beforehand. Chrysler says not to drive these vehicles until a dealer has inspected them. The dealer checks both arms and replaces them if needed.

The software in your 8.4-inch or 12-inch radio screen has a bug. After you back up and shift out of reverse, the picture from the backup camera can stay on the screen instead of switching back to the normal display. That means you can be driving forward while a rear-facing picture is still showing, which can pull your eyes and attention off the road ahead. The fix is a software update for the radio screen.

The steering rack is the part that turns your front wheels when you turn the wheel. In these Jeeps, the gear inside it can break. If it does, you can lose the ability to steer the vehicle. There is no warning before it happens, and losing steering control while driving can easily cause a crash. A dealer will replace the entire steering gear. This recall started back in October 2019, so an older Cherokee may still be waiting for the repair.

Your vehicle uses small sensors to tell when it has been hit hard enough to need the airbags. On these Cherokees, those sensors can fail, so the system may not recognize certain crashes the way it should. If that happens in a collision, the airbags may not go off when they should, or may not go off correctly, leaving people less protected. Dealers will replace the faulty sensors at no charge.

On some 2019 Jeep Cherokees, the bolts that hold the front passenger seat to the floor may not be tightened all the way. Day to day you probably would not notice anything, but in a crash a seat that is not bolted down firmly can shift, and the person sitting in it is more likely to be hurt. The fix is quick: Chrysler has already sent letters, and a dealer simply tightens the mounting bolts, at no charge.

On some Cherokees it can quit working, so you would get no warning sounds, no messages, and no gauges. The computer that controls the automatic transmission on some 2019 Jeep Cherokees with the 2.4-liter engine was programmed with the wrong settings. Because of that bad programming, the engine can shut off on its own while you are driving. Nothing is broken or worn out, so no parts need to be replaced. The dealer simply connects a computer to your Cherokee and loads corrected software into the transmission controller, which takes care of the problem.

The pistons inside the rear brake calipers may not have enough protective coating. Without it, pockets of gas can form in the rear brake system, and that can make the rear brakes less effective than they should be. You may not notice anything day to day, but the vehicle could take longer to stop, which raises the chance of a crash. Dealers will bleed the brake system to flush the gas pockets out, free of charge. This recall started September 29, 2018.

Some 2019 Jeep Cherokees with the 2.0-liter engine were built with parts missing or installed backwards. A small clip that holds an engine valve in place may be missing, which lets the valve drop down inside the cylinder and wreck the engine. A cap over the camshaft, the bar that opens and closes those valves, may have been fitted the wrong way around and can chew up its bearing. Either problem can make the engine quit while you are driving.

These vehicles have cruise control, which holds a set speed for you. A short circuit in the wiring can lock the cruise control on. If that happens, tapping the brake pedal or pressing the off button may not shut it off, and the vehicle can keep its speed or even speed up on its own.
