This is serious because it can happen suddenly while you are driving and you could lose control, so get it repaired promptly and be extra careful at highway speeds until then.

What's wrong, in plain English

The computer that controls the automatic transmission was programmed incorrectly. Under certain conditions the car can shift itself into a lower gear and slow down abruptly, without you touching the brake or the shifter. A sudden slowdown like that can make the car hard to control, especially at higher speeds or in traffic. Only MX-5 Miatas with automatic transmissions are affected. A dealer will load corrected software into the transmission computer at no charge.

3. Schedule the free reprogramming of the transmission computer.

Summary
Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2016-2019 MX-5 (Miata) vehicles with automatic transmissions. Due to incorrect programming of the Transmission Control Module (TCM), certain conditions may cause the vehicle to unexpectedly downshift and abruptly decelerate.
Safety risk
If the vehicle abruptly downshifts, the driver may lose control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the TCM with corrected software, free of charge. The recall began March 14, 2019. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, option 4. Mazda's number for this recall is 3019A.
