Mazda fuel pump failure can stall the engine

NHTSA campaign 21V875000 · Reported 2021-11-12 · Mazda North American Operations

high How serious is it? About this label

An engine that stalls unexpectedly in traffic is a genuine crash risk, but the notice does not tell owners to stop driving the vehicle.

What's wrong, in plain English

Certain Mazda3, Mazda6, Mazda2, MX-5, CX-3, CX-5 and CX-9 vehicles have a part inside the low-pressure fuel pump — the small spinning piece that pushes fuel toward the engine — that can crack and warp. When that happens the pump can quit working, and the engine can stall, meaning it shuts off while you are driving. Mazda dealers will replace the fuel pump at no cost to you.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your car is affected. 2. Contact your Mazda dealer or Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 Option 4 and mention recall 5321K. 3. Book the free fuel pump replacement.
