What's wrong, in plain English

On some Mazda MX-5 sports cars, a software error can keep the traction control and stability control warning light from lighting up. Those systems help keep the car from sliding or spinning on slippery roads or in fast turns. If one of them develops a fault, the dashboard light is supposed to warn you, but it may stay dark instead. The car does not meet a federal safety rule because of this. A dealer will replace the control unit for free.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your car is covered. 2. Contact your Mazda dealer, or Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 Option 6 (recall 7425E), for an appointment. 3. Have the unit replaced — there is no charge.

Summary
Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2024-2025 Mazda MX-5 vehicles. The Traction Control System (TCS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) indicator light may fail to illuminate as intended due to a software error. As such, these vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 126, "Electronic Stability Control Systems."
Safety risk
An indicator light that does not illuminate may fail to warn the driver of a TCS or DSC system issue, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the DSC unit, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 18, 2025. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 Option 6. Mazda's number for this recall is 7425E.
