This is serious because weakened or dragging brakes raise the risk of a crash; the notice does not order owners to stop riding, but get it repaired before you ride much further.

What's wrong, in plain English

On these BMW motorcycles and the C 400 X scooter, the pistons inside the front and rear brake calipers can rust. A rusty piston can stick or drag instead of moving freely, which changes how well the brakes work. Your dealer will replace both the front and rear brake calipers at no charge. The repair has been available since March 2020, so if your bike has never had it done, it is worth calling BMW to check.

2. Contact a BMW Motorrad dealer, or BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, to schedule the work.
3. Have the front and rear brake calipers replaced — free of charge.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019 C 400 X, 2018-2020 G 310 GS, and 2017-2020 G 310 R scooters and motorcycles. The front and rear brake caliper pistons may corrode, possibly causing the piston to stick or drag in the caliper bore.
Safety risk
A sticking or dragging brake could affect braking performance, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front and rear brake calipers, free of charge. The recall began March 13, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
