Jeep Cherokee steering gear may break, steering loss

NHTSA campaign 19V637000 · Reported 2019-08-29 · Chrysler (FCA US LLC)

critical How serious is it? About this label

This is very serious — you could lose steering control without warning, so contact a dealer immediately and limit driving until it is repaired.

What's wrong, in plain English

The steering rack is the part that turns your front wheels when you turn the wheel. In these Jeeps, the gear inside it can break. If it does, you can lose the ability to steer the vehicle. There is no warning before it happens, and losing steering control while driving can easily cause a crash. A dealer will replace the entire steering gear. This recall started back in October 2019, so an older Cherokee may still be waiting for the repair.

What you should do

2. Contact your Jeep dealer or Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403, recall number V99.
