Very serious: a wheel coming off at speed can cause a crash with little or no warning, so get the inspection done right away instead of putting it off.

What's wrong, in plain English

The lug nuts holding the right rear wheel onto certain Ioniq Hybrid and Elantra cars may not have been tightened enough when the cars were built. Nuts that are too loose can gradually back off, and the wheel can come off the car while you are driving. A dealer will look at that wheel's lug nuts and tighten them if they need it. The inspection is quick and there is no charge to you.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your car is included. 2. Call a Hyundai dealer or Hyundai customer service at 1-800-251-0871 (recall 184) and ask for the lug nut inspection under recall 19V720000. 3. Have the dealer do the work — the inspection and tightening are free.

Summary
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019 Ioniq Hybrid and 2020 Elantra vehicles. The right-side rear wheel lug nuts may have been insufficiently tightened, allowing the wheel to detach from the vehicle.
Safety risk
A wheel detaching from the vehicle increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, tighten the lug nuts, free of charge. The recall began November 15, 2019. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-251-0871. Hyundai's number for this recall is 184.
