What's wrong, in plain English

A circuit board inside the backup camera on these Hyundai vehicles can be damaged, and when that happens the camera picture may not appear on the screen as you back up. You could be looking at a blank display instead of the area behind the car. Federal rules require a working rear view, so these vehicles fall short of the standard. The fix is a brand-new rearview camera, installed by the dealer at no cost to you.

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your vehicle is covered by recall 271.
2. Contact your Hyundai dealer, or Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460, to book the camera replacement (owner letters went out January 14, 2025).
3. Get the new camera installed — parts and labor are free.

Summary
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Santa Fe, Santa Fe HEV, Elantra, Elantra HEV and 2022 Elantra N and Santa Fe PHEV vehicles. Due to a damaged printed circuit board, the rearview camera image may fail to display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Safety risk
A rearview image that does not display reduces the driver's visibility and increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the rearview camera, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 14, 2025. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 271.
