Tesla Model Y trailer brake lights may not light up

NHTSA campaign 20V609000 · Reported 2020-09-30 · Tesla, Inc.

medium How serious is it? About this label

Trailer brake lights that fail to illuminate during braking increase the risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

Certain 2020 Model Y vehicles built with the tow package had a software bug: when you are pulling a trailer and press the brake pedal, the trailer's brake lights may not come on. Drivers behind you would have no warning that you are slowing down. Tesla fixed this with a free software update sent to cars over the air starting September 23, 2020, so most affected vehicles already received the fix automatically.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Model Y is on the list. 2. Make sure your car is connected to Wi-Fi and its software is up to date so the free update installs. 3. If you are unsure it applied, contact Tesla at 1-877-798-3752 (recall SB-20-00-002).
