Tesla Model 3, S and Y backup camera lags

NHTSA campaign 26V283000 · Reported 2026-05-05 · Tesla, Inc.

medium How serious is it? About this label

A delayed rearview image reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

When you shift into reverse, the picture from the backup camera may take too long to appear on the screen. During those moments you cannot see what is behind the car — a child, a pet, a post — so you could back into something you never saw. This is a software problem on one particular software version, not a broken camera, and it means the car does not meet the federal rear visibility rule. Tesla is sending a free update.

What you should do

1. Confirm your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. 2. Connect your car to Wi-Fi and install the free over-the-air software update when it is offered. 3. If the update does not arrive, call Tesla at 1-877-798-3752 (recall SB-26-00-001).
