Ford Explorer and Lincoln SUVs lose rearview camera image
medium How serious is it? About this label
Moderately serious — you lose your rear view when backing up — and the notice places no limit on driving, so keep using your mirrors and turn around to look until the update is done.
What's wrong, in plain English
These SUVs came with a 360-degree camera system. The part that sends video to your dashboard screen can fail, so when you shift into reverse the picture from the backup camera does not come up. Without that view you cannot see a child, a pet, or an object directly behind the vehicle, which makes backing into something or someone more likely. The fix is a free software update to the module that handles the camera images.
