Ford backup camera recalls: why the rear image goes blank

34 NHTSA recalls · Ford · Back Over Prevention · model years 2018–2026 (we track 2018 and newer) · newest 2026-03-19

This is Ford's largest recall cluster here — 34 back-over recalls, and almost all describe the same thing: the rearview image going blank, blue, foggy, frozen or distorted when you shift into reverse, which makes the vehicle non-compliant with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111. Three causes repeat. Poor electrical connections drove recall 20C19, reissued across 2019-2020 F-150 and Super Duty, Explorer, Edge and more. The 360-degree camera on 2020-2023 Explorer, Lincoln Aviator and Corsair failed three separate times — two software updates, then outright camera replacement. Software bugs cover the rest: Edge, Maverick's Connected Touch Radio, Explorer Police Interceptor, and Super Duty's Pro Trailer Hitch Assist. Lens coating breakdown fogged Super Duty and Continental cameras, and water in the tailgate module blanked 2023-2024 Super Duty views.

Warning signs to watch for

Is it safe to keep driving?

None of these recalls tells you to stop driving or park outside. Every notice treats the vehicle as safe to keep using, because the defect affects only what appears on the screen while reversing — brakes, steering and airbags are untouched. The practical instruction is identical across all of them: back up slowly, use your mirrors, and turn and look over your shoulder instead of relying on the camera. That matters most in driveways, parking lots, and anywhere children may be behind the vehicle.

What the free repair involves

It depends on the cause, and all of it is free. Cameras are replaced where the connection, wiring or lens coating is at fault. Software-caused failures get module updates — image processing (IPMB and IPMA), ADAS, the Police Interceptor's integrated computer screen, or Maverick's Connected Touch Radio. Water intrusion on Super Duty means a new tailgate camera, harness and TPASIM module. One recall, on 2021-2022 Edge, can be done over the air.

Common questions

My backup camera works most of the time. Is my vehicle still affected?

Probably yes. Several notices, including recall 20C19, describe the image failing intermittently because of a poor electrical connection. A camera that works today can go blank tomorrow, so have the free repair done rather than waiting for it to fail.

Can any of these be fixed without going to a dealer?

Only one. The 2021-2022 Edge software recall can be updated over the air or by a dealer. Everything else in this group — camera replacements, wiring repairs and the other module software updates — requires a dealer visit.

Why has my Explorer been recalled for the camera more than once?

The 360-degree camera on 2020-2023 Explorer, Aviator and Corsair was recalled three times for the same video output failure. Ford tried image processing module software updates in 2021 and 2023, then replaced the 360-degree camera outright in the 2023 remedy.
