Volkswagen ID.4 may lose steering from faulty gear
critical How serious is it? About this label
Losing steering control is very serious and could cause a crash with little warning, and while the notice does not tell the owner to park the car, this repair should be arranged right away.
What's wrong, in plain English
One 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 may have left the factory with a small part inside the steering gear — called a drive bushing — that was put in wrong or left out entirely. The steering gear is what turns your movements at the steering wheel into the wheels actually turning. If that part is missing or badly fitted, the driver could lose the ability to steer the car. Volkswagen is recalling this single vehicle, and a dealer will install a new steering gear at no cost.
