What's wrong, in plain English

The big battery packs in these ID.4s contain cells whose internal parts may be out of line, and that can set off a battery fire. Until a dealer swaps out the faulty cell modules for free, Volkswagen asks you to move the car outside as soon as charging is done, never leave it charging indoors overnight, skip the fast public DC chargers, and stop charging at 80 percent rather than filling the battery all the way.

What you should do

1. Change your charging habits now: charge to 80 percent maximum, avoid Level 3 DC fast chargers, do not charge indoors overnight, and park outside straight after charging.
2. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your ID.4 is affected.
3. Contact your VW dealer or Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 (recall 93EV) for the free replacement of the battery cell modules.

Summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2023-2024 ID.4 vehicles. The high voltage (HV) battery cell modules may contain misaligned electrodes that can result in a battery fire.
Safety risk
A vehicle fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
Remedy
Owners are advised to park outside immediately after charging and not leave their vehicles charging indoors overnight until the recall repair is complete. Also, owners are advised not to use Level 3 DC chargers and to limit the maximum charge of the battery to 80% until the remedy has been completed. Dealers will replace the high voltage battery cell modules as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 11, 2026. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 93EV. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on December 5, 2025.
