Running out of fuel unexpectedly can cause a stall and a crash, so the notice does not tell you to stop driving, but do not trust the gauge until it is fixed.

What's wrong, in plain English

A software mistake in the dashboard display can make the fuel gauge show the wrong amount of gas. You might think you have plenty left when the tank is nearly empty. If that happens, the car can run out of fuel and stall while you are driving, possibly in traffic or at speed. The fix is a free software update at the dealer that corrects the gauge reading.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is included. 2. Call your Kia dealer or Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and mention recall SC219. 3. Have the software update done, which is free of charge.

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Stinger vehicles. A software error in the instrument cluster may cause an inaccurate fuel gauge reading.
Safety risk
An inaccurate fuel gauge may result in the vehicle unexpectedly running out of fuel and stalling, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will update the software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 10, 2021. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC219.
