Serious: losing stability on a motorcycle can cause a crash, and although BMW does not tell riders to stop riding, it mailed an early warning letter about the safety risk, so get the free repair before putting more miles on the bike.

What's wrong, in plain English

On some 2019-2020 BMW K1600 GT, K1600 GTL and K1600 B motorcycles, a small connecting rod called the link strut, which joins the rear suspension to the frame, may not be strong enough. Over time it can be damaged. If that happens, the back of the motorcycle can drop far enough to touch the rear tire. That makes the bike hard to keep steady and control while riding, and a crash becomes more likely.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your motorcycle is included.
2. Call your BMW Motorrad dealer, or BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and schedule the repair.
3. Have the dealer replace the rear link strut, which is free of charge.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019-2020 K1600 GT, K1600 GTL, and K1600 B motorcycles. The link strut connecting the rear suspension to the frame may have insufficient strength, which can cause the link strut to become damaged.
Safety risk
A damaged link strut can cause the rear of the motorcycle to contact the rear wheel, affecting riding stability and control, and increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the rear link strut, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters to inform owners of the safety risk were mailed on March 11, 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed June 21, 2022. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
