Very serious, because overheating can lead to a fire; the notice does not tell owners to stop riding, but the free repair is not available yet, so watch for burning smells, smoke, or heat around the bike.

What's wrong, in plain English

These touring motorcycles have a small electric reverse gear that helps you back the bike out of a spot. A seal on the control box for that reverse gear can break down over time and let moisture get inside. Water in the box can make the electronics overheat, and an overheating unit can start a fire. BMW has already mailed a warning letter, but the repair parts are not ready yet. A second letter will come when dealers can do the work.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your motorcycle is included.
2. Watch for BMW's second letter saying the fix is ready, or call BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
3. Have your dealer replace the reverse gear control unit free of charge as soon as parts are available.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2017-2025 K 1600 GT, GTL, B and 2018-2025 Grand America vehicles. The seal for the reverse gear control unit may deteriorate and allow moisture inside the control unit, which can result in the unit overheating.
Safety risk
An overheated reverse gear control unit increases the risk of a fire.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the reverse gear control unit, free of charge. Letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed May 28, 2026. A second letter will be mailed once the remedy is available. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning May 25, 2026.
