Kia EV6 may roll away after being parked

NHTSA campaign 22V322000 · Reported 2022-05-11 · Kia Motors America

high How serious is it? About this label

A vehicle that rolls away on its own can cause a crash or hurt someone, but the notice does not tell owners to stop driving — park on level ground and avoid slopes until the software is updated.

What's wrong, in plain English

On certain 2022 EV6 vehicles, a software error in the unit that controls the gear shifter can release the parking mechanism by itself. If that happens, the vehicle can roll away after you park it. Until the repair is done, Kia tells drivers to park on level ground and avoid parking on hills or other sloped surfaces whenever possible. A dealer will update the shifter control unit software. Owner letters were mailed in May 2022 and the repair costs nothing.

What you should do

1. Park on level ground and stay off slopes until the fix is done. 2. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your EV6 is included. 3. Call your Kia dealer or Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 (recall SC236) to get the free software update.
