Mercedes-Benz emergency call system may stop working entirely

NHTSA campaign 22V365000 · Reported 2022-05-20 · Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC

medium How serious is it? About this label

A disabled eCall system would prevent a vehicle occupant from contacting the emergency services call center in an emergency, potentially delaying emergency responders and increasing the risk of injury. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

These Mercedes vehicles have a built-in emergency call system that connects the people inside to an emergency call center. A software fault on the SIM card in the car's communication unit can stop the car from connecting to the mobile network, and that shuts the emergency call feature down. You would not know until you needed it, and help could be delayed. The car otherwise drives normally. The fix is a software update, sent to the car over the air or done by a dealer.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is on the list.
2. Watch for the over-the-air software update, or contact your dealer or MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 (recall 2022060005 / 2023110006).
3. Confirm the free update has been applied; owner letters have been mailed in phases from July 2022 through September 2024.
