Mercedes-Benz AMG E53 and CLS53 cable can overheat, catch fire

Mercedes does not tell owners to park the car or keep it outside, but anything that can start an engine-bay fire is serious, so get the free inspection done as soon as possible.

What's wrong, in plain English

These Mercedes-Benz models, including the AMG CLS53 and AMG E53, use a 48-volt electrical system. The ground cable for that system, in the engine bay, may not have been tightened down properly at the factory. A loose connection there can get very hot, and an overheating cable can start a fire under the hood. Dealers will inspect the connection and tighten or repair it free of charge, so do not put this one off.

2. Call a Mercedes-Benz dealer right away and schedule the free inspection and repair of the 48-volt ground cable connection.

Summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2021-2023 CLS450, E450, E450 All-Terrain, AMG E53, AMG GT43, AMG GT53, and 2021 AMG CLS53 vehicles. The 48-volt ground cable connection located in the engine compartment may not be tightened properly and may result in the ground cable overheating.
Safety risk
An overheated ground cable increases the risk of a fire.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect the 48-volt ground cable connection and repair it as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 22, 2024. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2024MMNNNN.
