Very serious — the notice does not tell riders to park the bike, but a rear wheel that locks while riding can cause a crash with little or no warning, so book the software update before your next long ride.

What's wrong, in plain English

Under certain engine and riding conditions, a shaft inside the gearbox of these BMW motorcycles can be damaged or break. If that happens, the rear wheel can lock up and stop turning while you are riding, which can throw the bike out of control. There is no part to replace here — dealers correct the problem by reprogramming the motorcycle's engine control computer, at no charge to you.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your motorcycle is covered.
2. Contact your BMW Motorrad dealer, or BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, to book the visit.
3. Have the engine control software updated free of charge; owner letters were mailed February 22, 2023.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019-2023 R1250GS, R1250GS Adventure, and R1250RTP motorcycles. In certain engine operating and riding conditions, the gearbox input shaft may become damaged or break, possibly resulting in a blocked rear wheel.
Safety risk
A damaged gearbox input shaft or a blocked rear wheel can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will update the engine control unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 22, 2023. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
