What's wrong, in plain English

Certain Ford Explorer, Lincoln Aviator and Lincoln Corsair SUVs with the 360-degree camera system can lose the video signal. When that happens, the picture from the backup camera does not show up on the dashboard screen after you shift into reverse. You are left backing up with a blank or frozen display and cannot see children, pets or objects behind you. The dealer fixes it with a free software update.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is included.
2. Call your Ford or Lincoln dealer, or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (recall 23S02), and book the free software update.
3. Get the repair even if your camera was already fixed under the earlier recall 21V-735 — that older fix does not count, and a new one is needed.

Component: BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, and 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsair vehicles equipped with a 360-degree camera. The video output may fail, preventing the rearview camera image from displaying.
Safety risk: Loss of the rearview camera image can reduce the driver's rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will update the image processing module (IPMB) software, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed April 25, 2023. Owner notification letters were mailed February 13, 2023. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S02. This recall expands and replaces NHTSA recall number 21V-735. Vehicles previously repaired under 21V-735 will need to have the new remedy performed.
