Ford Explorer Police Interceptor backup camera may not display
medium How serious is it? About this label
A rearview camera that does not display an image can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.
What's wrong, in plain English
These Explorer Police Interceptor Utility SUVs have a 12.1-inch computer screen in the dash. If you use the display On/Off button to turn that screen off, and then shift into reverse, the backup camera picture never comes up and the screen simply stays blank. Federal safety rules require a rear view image whenever you back up, so these vehicles do not meet the standard. A dealer fixes it with a free software update to the screen system.
What you should do
2. Call your Ford dealer, or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, and book the software update.
3. Have the dealer perform the update; the repair is free. Until then, leave the display turned on when you back up.
