Serious but not urgent in the sense of parking the car: the vehicle drives normally and the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but a front passenger rides without airbag protection until the software is updated.

What's wrong, in plain English

Some 2024 Palisades with the dark premium suede seats have a problem with the sensor system in the front passenger seat. That system is supposed to figure out whether someone is sitting there, and it can get it wrong, reading the seat as empty when a person is actually in it. When that happens, the car shuts off the front passenger airbag. In a crash, that airbag would stay closed instead of inflating. A dealer fixes it with a software update.

What you should do

3. Have the dealer do the repair, which is free; until then, consider seating passengers in the back.

Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2024 Palisade vehicles equipped with dark premium suede seats. The Occupant Detection System (ODS) may fail to detect an occupant and deactivate the passenger-side front air bags. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Safety risk: Deactivated front passenger air bags will not deploy as intended, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will update the ODS software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 26th, 2023. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 249.
