A rear seat belt that does not restrain a passenger properly can mean serious injury in a crash; Hyundai does not tell owners to stop driving, but get it checked soon, especially if you carry back seat passengers.

What's wrong, in plain English

The seat belts for the two outer rear seats in some 2024 Kona vehicles may not work correctly. The problem is in the retractor, the spool inside the belt that pulls it snug and locks it in a crash. If a belt does not lock or hold as it should, a passenger in the back may not be held safely during a crash. Dealers will check both belts and replace the retractor if needed.

Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2024 Kona vehicles. The seat belt assemblies in the right and left rear seats may not function properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 208, "Occupation Crash Protection" and 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies."
Safety risk: A seat belt that does not function properly may not adequately restrain an occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the seat belt retractor as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 21, 2023. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 250.
