Why do Hyundai seat belt recalls keep hitting pretensioners and buckles?
Twelve Hyundai seat belt recalls split into two waves. From 2021 through 2022, front pretensioners that could explode during a crash swept the lineup: Accent 2020-2022, Elantra and Elantra HEV 2021-2022, Venue 2020-2022, Santa Fe Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid 2021-2022, plus Genesis GV80, GV70 and G80 Electric. Accent and Elantra owners were covered more than once as the population expanded and the remedy shifted from replacing pretensioners to capping them. The later wave is hardware that will not hold: Palisade 2020-2025 buckles that fail to latch, Kona 2024-2026 rear belts and center buckle, Ioniq 6, Santa Fe and Genesis G90 anchors that may detach, and loose front retractors on the 2025 IONIQ 5.
Warning signs to watch for
- For the exploding pretensioners, the notices describe no warning at all — the danger appears only during a crash.
- A buckle that does not click or hold when you pull on the belt (2020-2025 Palisade).
- A rear center belt buckle that will not properly secure a passenger (2024-2026 Kona).
- A front seat belt retractor that feels loose or is not firmly fastened to the body (2025 IONIQ 5).
- Rear seat belts that do not retract or restrain normally (2024 Kona).
Is it safe to keep driving?
No Hyundai seat belt recall here tells owners to stop driving or park outside. Two carry conditions, though. On the 2024-2026 Kona, Hyundai says nobody should ride in the rear center seat until the buckle assembly is replaced. On 2020-2025 Palisade, owners are told to insert each belt firmly with a quick, direct motion and pull on it to confirm it is locked until the buckles are replaced. For the pretensioner, anchor and retractor recalls, keep wearing your belts and drive normally while you schedule the free repair promptly.
What the free repair involves
It depends on the defect. For exploding pretensioners, the earlier recalls replaced the pretensioner assemblies while later ones secure them with a cap. Kona rear belts get a retractor inspection and replacement as needed, and the rear center buckle assembly is replaced. Palisade buckles are replaced. Anchors are inspected and reinforced or replaced, and IONIQ 5 retractors are inspected and secured. All of it is free.

Common questions
My Accent or Elantra was recalled for the pretensioners more than once — why?
Hyundai expanded the affected population several times between February and May 2022, and the remedy itself changed from replacing the pretensioners to capping them. Each campaign has its own recall number, so check your VIN against every open recall rather than assuming one visit covered it.
Should I stop wearing the seat belt until it is repaired?
No. None of these notices tell owners to stop using their belts, and a belt still protects you. The one exception is the Kona rear center seat, which Hyundai says should be left unused until the buckle assembly is replaced.
My car is a Genesis — is it part of these Hyundai recalls?
