Ford Explorer backup camera can show blank blue screen

NHTSA campaign 23V686000 · Reported 2023-10-13 · Ford Motor Company

medium How serious is it? About this label

A rearview camera that does not properly display an image can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

When you shift into reverse, the backup camera may show a blank blue screen instead of the view behind your Explorer. The cause is a wiring mistake made during assembly — a loose connection in the bundle of wires that feeds the camera. If you cannot see what is behind you when backing up, it is easier to hit a person, a pet, or another vehicle. A dealer will check the camera wiring and repair any loose connections for free.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Explorer is covered. 2. Contact your Ford dealer or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (recall 23C31) to schedule the wiring inspection. 3. Get the repair — it is free.
