Volkswagen ID.4 roof sunshade fabric burns too easily

This is a lower-level safety concern that only matters if a fire has already started, and Volkswagen has not told owners to stop driving or park outside, so normal use is fine until the free treatment is done.

What's wrong, in plain English

Certain 2023 and 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles have a pull-across sunshade under the large glass roof made from fabric that does not resist flame as well as federal safety rules require. The shade will not start a fire on its own. But if a fire began inside the vehicle for some other reason, this fabric could burn more readily and help the fire spread, leaving people less time to get out. Dealers will treat the fabric with flame retardant.

Component: STRUCTURE
Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2023-2024 ID.4 vehicles. The interior sunshade for the panoramic glass roof may be insufficiently fire retardant. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 302, "Flammability of Interior Materials."
Safety risk: In a fire, fabric that is not fire retardant may further fuel a fire, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: Dealers will apply flame retardant to the sunshade fabric, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 15, 2023. Owners may contact Volkswagen's customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 60G3.
