Ford Explorer backup camera image goes blank or scrambled

NHTSA campaign 24V188000 · Reported 2024-03-08 · Ford Motor Company

medium How serious is it? About this label

A rearview camera that displays a blank or distorted image can reduce the drivers view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

Some 2020 Ford Explorers have a poor electrical connection at the rearview camera. Because of it, the camera picture on your dashboard screen can go blank or turn distorted while you are backing up, and the problem may come and go without warning. Federal safety rules require a working backup camera view, so these vehicles do not meet the standard. A Ford dealer will install a new camera at no cost to you.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Explorer is included in recall 24V188000 (Ford calls it 20C19).
2. Call your Ford dealer, or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, and book an appointment to have the rearview camera replaced.
3. Have the work done — the new camera and labor are free, even if you bought the vehicle used.
