Ford Maverick backup camera image may freeze in reverse

NHTSA campaign 24V684000 · Reported 2024-09-13 · Ford Motor Company

medium How serious is it? About this label

Moderate — a frozen rear image cuts your visibility when backing up and raises crash risk, but the notice does not tell owners to stop driving the truck.

What's wrong, in plain English

When you shift into reverse, the picture from the backup camera can lock up on the radio screen instead of showing what's happening live behind the truck. A frozen image is easy to mistake for a live one, so you might back into something that moved in behind you. Always turn and look over your shoulder as well until it's fixed. A Ford dealer updates the radio software for free; owner letters went out in March 2025.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Maverick is affected.
2. Ask a Ford dealer for the radio software update under recall 24S59 (Ford customer service: 1-866-436-7332).
3. The update is free — check your mirrors and turn to look while backing up until then.
