What's wrong, in plain English

The backup camera on these Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs can quit working once the vehicle is moving 10 mph or faster. If the screen goes out while you are backing up, you lose your view of what is behind you. Federal rules require a working rear camera, so these vehicles do not meet the standard. The fix is a software update, which can arrive over the air or be done by the dealer.

Summary
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2025 Explorer and Lincoln Aviator vehicles. The rearview camera image may fail when the vehicle speed reaches 10 MPH or greater. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Safety risk
The loss of the rearview camera image while in reverse can reduce the driver's rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
The accessory protocol interface module (APIM) software will be updated through an over-the-air (OTA) update or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 28, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 24C34. (over-the-air software update)
