Serious — losing rear braking along with anti-lock brakes and stability control increases crash risk, so book the repair quickly even though BMW does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

The hoses that carry brake fluid to the rear brakes on these X3s can leak. If that happens, you lose braking at the rear wheels, and you also lose the anti-lock brakes and the stability control system that helps keep the vehicle from sliding. That means it takes longer to stop and the vehicle is harder to control in an emergency. Dealers will replace the rear brake hoses at no charge. BMW mailed owner letters on May 9, 2025.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your X3 is covered.
2. Contact your BMW dealer or BMW at 800-525-7417 to schedule hose replacement.
3. Have both rear brake hoses replaced — the repair is free.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2025 X3 30 xDrive and X3 M50 xDrive vehicles. The rear brake hoses may leak, causing a loss of rear brake function, and a loss of the Antilock Brake System (ABS) and the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system.
Safety risk
A loss of rear brake function increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the rear brake hoses, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 9, 2025. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 800-525-7417.
