Very serious, because losing the brakes on a downhill can cause a crash; Volvo does not tell owners to park the car, but you must stop using B mode or One Pedal Drive until the update is installed.

What's wrong, in plain English

On these Volvo plug in hybrids and electric models, the software that runs the braking system has a flaw. In certain situations, when you are coasting down a hill using B mode on a hybrid or One Pedal Drive on an electric model, the brakes can stop working. Volvo says not to use those two driving modes at all until the fix is done. The repair is a software update that can be sent to the car over the air or done at a dealer.

1. Stop using B mode (plug in hybrids) or One Pedal Drive (electric models) right now. 2. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is included; notification letters were mailed July 15, 2025. 3. Accept the over-the-air software update when it arrives, or call a Volvo dealer or Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552 with recall number R10329 — the update is free.

Volvo Car USA, LLC (Volvo Car) is recalling certain 2023 Volvo C40 BEV, 2025 EC40, 2023-2024 XC40 BEV, 2020-2026 XC90 PHEV, 2022-2026 XC60 PHEV, 2023-2025 S60 PHEV, 2024-2025 V60 PHEV, and 2025-2026 EX40 and 2025 S90 PHEV vehicles. In certain driving scenarios while coasting down a hill and using "B" mode or "One Pedal Drive," the vehicle may lose brake function.
Safety risk
A loss of brake function increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Owners are advised not to use "B" Mode (for plug-in hybrid vehicles) or "One Pedal Drive" (for pure electric vehicles) until the repair has been completed. The brake module software will be updated over-the-air (OTA) or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 15, 2025. Owners may contact Volvo Car's customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10329.
