Volvo XC40 software fault kills left rear turn signal

NHTSA campaign 24V010000 · Reported 2024-01-10 · Volvo Car USA, LLC

medium How serious is it? About this label

A nonfunctioning exterior turn signal may not notify other drivers of a turning vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

A software glitch in the car's central electronics module can stop the left rear turn signal from working. When you signal a left turn, the light at the back of the car on that side may not blink, so drivers behind you get no warning that you are about to turn. Volvo will fix it with a software update, either at a dealer or sent to the car over the air, free of charge.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm recall R10256 applies to your XC40. 2. Watch for the over-the-air update, or book a dealer visit to have the software loaded. 3. Contact Volvo at 1-800-458-1552 with questions — the update costs you nothing.
