A detached trim piece can become a road hazard for other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

The belt molding is the trim strip that runs along the bottom edge of each door window. On some of these SUVs the layers of that strip can separate, and the trim can peel away and come off the vehicle while you are driving. Trim lying in the road, or coming loose at highway speed, can be a hazard for the cars behind you. Dealers will inspect the belt moldings and replace any that need it, free.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is part of recall 25V494000 (Kia's number is SC347).
2. Call your Kia dealer, or Kia customer service at 800-333-4542, to book the inspection.
3. Have the dealer inspect and replace the belt molding trim as needed; there is no charge.
