Lexus fuel system recalls: stalling fuel pumps and fire risk
Three of these four Lexus recalls are the same fault: the low-pressure fuel pump inside the tank can fail and shut the engine down. The January 2020 and November 2020 campaigns swept up 2018-2019 ES 350, GX 460, LS 500, LX 570, NX 300, RC 300, RX 350 and RX 350L models alongside many Toyotas, and an April 2026 recall returns to the same pump on 2015-2022 RC, 2016-2020 GS and 2022 IS vehicles. Model years 2018 and 2019 appear most often. The odd one out is the RX 350, where a rear transport hook was not removed before sale — a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 301 fuel system integrity failure that can cause a fire in a rear-end crash.
Warning signs to watch for
- The engine stalls or shuts off while you are driving
- The engine may fail to run, leaving you stranded in traffic
- A sudden loss of engine power; the notices promise no advance warning before the pump fails
- On affected RX 350s, a rear transport hook still attached under the vehicle — nothing you would notice while driving
Is it safe to keep driving?
No recall in this group tells Lexus owners to stop driving or to park outside. Toyota's wording is consistent: you may keep driving, but have the free repair done as soon as you can, because an engine that stalls without warning can leave you stranded in traffic and raise the risk of a crash. The RX 350 transport hook recall is also not a stop-driving order, but it can cause a fire after a rear-end crash, so treat that inspection as urgent too.
What the free repair involves
For the three fuel pump recalls, dealers replace the low-pressure fuel pump assembly with an improved part. On the RX 350 transport hook recall, they inspect the rear of the vehicle and remove the hook if it is still attached. All work is free, none is over-the-air, and on the 2026 pump recall interim letters went out before the final parts were available.

My Lexus had its fuel pump replaced years ago — is the 2026 recall a repeat?
The 2026 recall covers 2015-2022 RC, 2016-2020 GS and 2022 IS vehicles. Some model years overlap the earlier campaigns, so check your VIN with a Lexus dealer rather than assuming an earlier pump replacement already covered your car.
What does a transport hook have to do with the fuel system?
The hook secures vehicles during shipping and should be removed before sale. Left on certain 2019 and 2021 RX 350s, the vehicle fails Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 301 for fuel system integrity and could catch fire after a rear-end crash.
Will the engine warn me before it stalls?
The notices say the engine can shut off while you are driving and that losing power in traffic can cause a crash. They do not describe any warning beforehand, which is why the free pump replacement should not be postponed.
