Infiniti QX30 driver's airbag can deploy without a crash

NHTSA campaign 17V691000 · Reported 2017-11-01 · Nissan North America, Inc.

critical How serious is it? About this label

Serious — the notice says an unexpected deployment raises the risk of injury and a crash, and there is no warning before it happens, so get this fixed right away even though Nissan does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

The steering wheel parts in these Infiniti QX30s may not be grounded well enough. If static electricity builds up and the coiled wiring inside the steering wheel that feeds the driver's airbag is already broken, the airbag can go off on its own, with no crash and no warning. A sudden deployment in your face while you are driving can injure you and cause you to lose control. Dealers add extra grounding to the steering parts to stop this.
