Infiniti airbag recalls: unexpected deployment and moisture-damaged inflators
These three Infiniti airbag recalls are three different defects rather than one repeating fault. The oldest, from November 2017, covers 2017-2018 QX30 vehicles whose driver's airbag may deploy with no crash at all if an electrostatic discharge meets a broken clockspring and insufficient grounding in the steering components. The 2018 recall covers the 2019 QX50, where the passenger-side knee airbag trim cover may separate instead of splitting at its tear seam during a crash in very cold temperatures. The newest, from February 2024, pulls the 2023-2024 QX50 into a Nissan-wide inflator recall alongside the QX60, Rogue, Sentra, Versa and Kicks. The QX50 is the model that appears twice.
Warning signs to watch for
- The driver's airbag deploying with no crash — the QX30 notice states there is no warning before it happens
- In the QX30, the defect involves a broken airbag clockspring in the steering column
- The 2019 QX50 knee airbag cover problem only shows itself in a crash in very cold temperatures
- The 2024 inflator recall gives no driver-noticeable sign; the airbag simply may not deploy properly in a crash
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these three recalls carries a stop-driving or park-outside instruction. The 2024 inflator recall states the vehicle is safe to drive normally and should be repaired as soon as a replacement part is available. The 2019 QX50 knee airbag is fine day to day; its risk appears only in a cold-weather crash. The QX30 unexpected-deployment recall is the one to act on fastest — Nissan does not tell owners to park it, but the notice says the airbag can fire with no warning.
What the free repair involves
All three remedies are hardware, and all are free of charge. On the 2017-2018 QX30, dealers add sufficient grounding to the steering components. On the 2019 QX50, retailers replace the passenger-side knee airbag module. On the 2023-2024 QX50 covered by the inflator recall, dealers replace the front driver's airbag assembly. No software or over-the-air update is involved.
