Mazda CX-5 side curtain airbags may not unfold properly

NHTSA campaign 18V426000 · Reported 2018-06-25 · Mazda North American Operations

medium How serious is it? About this label

This is serious in a crash because the airbags may not protect you as intended, but the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, so you can keep driving while you schedule the free repair.

What's wrong, in plain English

Your CX-5 has curtain airbags that drop down from above the side windows to protect your head in a side crash or a rollover. On these vehicles, those airbags may not open up the way they are supposed to when they inflate. That means they may not cover the window area properly and may not do their job of keeping people from being thrown out or hitting the window. Mazda is replacing the curtain airbags.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your CX-5 is included in recall 18V426000.
2. Call a Mazda dealer and ask for recall 2718F, or reach Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, Option 4.
3. Have the curtain airbags replaced — the repair is free.
