Mazda airbag recalls: which models can deploy wrong or shut off?
Four Mazda recalls, and three of the four come down to airbag control software rather than the bags themselves. On 2024-2025 Mazda3 and CX-30 models, the Sophisticated Air Bag Sensor unit can set an error code and deactivate the airbags under a low battery condition. The 2025 CX-50 and CX-50 Hybrid were built with incorrectly configured module software that could make an airbag deploy improperly, and a software error in 2016-2023 MX-5 Miatas can make the front bags deploy with excessive force. Only the 2018 CX-5 is a hardware case: its side curtain airbags may not unfold properly in a side impact or rollover, failing a federal standard.
Warning signs to watch for
- An airbag warning light on the dash — the Mazda3 and CX-30 fault sets an error code and can switch the airbags off
- Signs of a weak or low battery on 2024-2025 Mazda3 and CX-30 vehicles
- For the CX-5, CX-50 and MX-5 recalls the notices describe no warning at all — the defect only shows in a crash
- Nothing changes in how any of these vehicles drive
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of the four notices tells owners to stop driving or park outside, and all four vehicles drive normally. The difference is what happens in a crash: the Mazda3 and CX-30 problem can leave the airbags deactivated, so if the airbag warning light is on, treat that as protection you do not have and get the car in quickly. The CX-5 curtain bags, CX-50 deployment and MX-5 excessive force issues only matter at the moment of a crash, so continue driving while you book the free repair.
What the free repair involves
Three of the four are handled with software at the dealer, free of charge: the Mazda3 and CX-30 SAS unit is reprogrammed with improved software or replaced, the CX-50's module software is corrected, and the MX-5's Sophisticated Air Bag Sensor module is updated. The 2018 CX-5 needs hardware — dealers replace the side curtain airbags. No cost to owners, and none is done over the air.

Common questions
Can a low battery really turn off my Mazda3's airbags?
Mazda says the Sophisticated Air Bag Sensor units may set an error code and deactivate the air bags due to a low battery condition on 2024-2025 Mazda3 and CX-30 vehicles. Reprogramming or replacing the SAS unit is the remedy.
I never got a recall letter for my CX-50. Why not?
Mazda said owner notifications were not mailed for the CX-50 recall because all affected vehicles were under Mazda dealer control at the time. If you own one, ask a dealer or Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 to check your VIN.
Would I notice the MX-5 airbag problem before a crash?
No. The recall covers a software error in the air bag control module that may cause the front air bags to deploy with excessive force during a crash. The car drives and feels normal, so rely on a VIN check.
