The car itself drives normally with no added crash risk, but a person trapped in the trunk could be seriously hurt, so it is worth fixing promptly.

What's wrong, in plain English

Every new car sold in the U.S. must have a release inside the trunk so that anyone shut in there can push the lid open from the inside. On some of these BMW 3 Series cars, including the M340i, that release cable was not installed correctly at the factory, so pulling it may not open the trunk. Someone closed inside — most likely a child playing — might not be able to get out. A dealer will check the cable and install it properly.

Component: STRUCTURE:BODY:TRUNK LID
Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020 330i, 330i xDrive and M340i vehicles. The interior trunk release cable may have been improperly installed, preventing the opening of the trunk from the inside. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 401, "Internal Trunk Release."
Safety risk: If a person were inside the trunk compartment, they may not be able to get out, increasing their risk of injury.
Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the interior trunk release cable and properly install the cable, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began December 13, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
