Ford Expedition passenger seat belt sensor may misread occupant

NHTSA campaign 20V217000 · Reported 2020-04-16 · Ford Motor Company

high How serious is it? About this label

Serious for anyone riding in the front passenger seat, since protection in a crash may fall short; Ford has not told owners to stop driving, but get the buckle replaced promptly.

What's wrong, in plain English

On certain 2020 Ford Expeditions, a sensor built into the front passenger seat belt buckle can fail. That sensor helps the vehicle figure out who is sitting in the seat, and a bad reading can put the person in the wrong category. If a crash happens, the car's safety systems may not protect that passenger the way they are supposed to, raising the chance of injury. A dealer will replace the whole passenger buckle.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Expedition is included (Ford's recall number is 20S17). 2. Contact your Ford dealer or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 to schedule the buckle replacement. 3. The repair is free; until it is done, consider keeping passengers out of the front passenger seat.
