Nissan LEAF back-up camera image can disappear

NHTSA campaign 20V412000 · Reported 2020-07-17 · Nissan North America, Inc.

medium How serious is it? About this label

The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

When you shift into reverse, the picture from the back-up camera can vanish from the dashboard screen under certain conditions. That leaves you backing up with no camera view of what is behind you, which federal safety rules require the car to provide. Nothing is physically broken — the problem is in the camera's software, and a Nissan dealer reloads corrected software at no cost. The recall began August 31, 2020.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your LEAF is included.
2. Call your Nissan dealer, or Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669, and book the camera software update.
3. Have the update done — the repair is completely free.
