What's wrong, in plain English

The wiring that carries the picture from the backup camera can get damaged. When it is, the image on the screen may look scrambled or not show up at all, so the driver cannot see what is behind the car while backing up. Certain 2018-2022 LEAF cars are affected. A dealer will check the camera and its wiring, replace parts if damaged, and otherwise reroute the wire and add protective tape, all free.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your LEAF is covered. 2. Contact your Nissan dealer or Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 and mention recall R23D7. 3. Have the dealer inspect and repair or reroute the camera wiring, which is free of charge.

Component: BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2022 LEAF vehicles. Damage to the camera harness can cause distortion or loss of the rearview camera display image. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Safety risk: A rearview camera that does not properly display an image can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect the rearview camera and harness for damage and replace them as necessary. If no damage is found, the dealer will apply protective tape and reroute the rearview camera harness. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 9, 2024. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R23D7.
