Why does my Nissan backup camera go blank when reversing?
All nine of these Nissan and Infiniti recalls fail the same federal rule — FMVSS 111, "Rear Visibility" — because the rearview image can vanish, freeze or distort when you shift into reverse. Seven trace to software: infotainment head units that reboot at startup or when SiriusXM is set to "Not Subscribed," and display errors that paint a blank screen. Two are physical — damaged rearview camera harnesses on 2019-2021 Altima and 2020-2021 Sentra, and on 2018-2022 LEAF. The Rogue is the most repeated model, showing up in the 2019, 2022 and 2024-2025 campaigns; LEAF, Kicks, Frontier, Armada, Murano and the Infiniti QX80 also recur. The recalls run from 2019 through late 2025, and several can be fixed over the air.
Warning signs to watch for
- A black or blank screen the moment you shift into reverse
- The rear image looks distorted, scrambled or flickers
- The infotainment or center display reboots repeatedly when you start the vehicle
- The camera image appears and then disappears while you are still backing up
- The rear view works some trips and not others
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of the nine notices tells owners to stop driving or park outside, and none affects steering, braking or the engine. Nissan treats these as visibility defects: with the rear image missing or scrambled you are backing up nearly blind, so until the repair is done, reverse slowly, check both mirrors and turn and look over your shoulder — especially in driveways, parking lots and anywhere a child or pedestrian may be behind you. The camera is required by federal law, which is why each of these became a recall.
What the free repair involves
Seven of the nine are software: dealers reprogram the back-up camera settings, the in-vehicle infotainment system or the center information display, and on three recalls that update can arrive over the air instead of at a dealer. The two harness recalls are hands-on — the dealer inspects the rearview camera and harness, replaces damaged parts, or applies protective tape and reroutes the harness. All of it is free.

Common questions
Will my fix arrive over the air, or do I need a dealer visit?
Three of these recalls — the 2021-2022 Rogue, Frontier, Pathfinder and Titan infotainment recalls, and the 2024-2025 Rogue and Infiniti QX80 recall — can be updated over the air or by a dealer. The remaining six require a dealer visit.
My camera quit after my SiriusXM lapsed. Is that this recall?
One July 2022 recall covers rental 2021-2022 Rogue and 2022 Frontier, Pathfinder and Titan vehicles where a SiriusXM subscription set to "Not Subscribed" made the infotainment head unit reboot and left the rearview camera inoperative. The software update fixes it.
Is a blank backup camera really worth a recall?
Yes. A working rearview image is required by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111, so a camera that goes blank or distorts puts the vehicle out of compliance. The repair is free, whether it is a software update or a new harness.
