This one is serious because a leak can both strand you and start a fire; the notice does not order you to park the vehicle, but get it in to a dealer immediately.

What's wrong, in plain English

Bolts on a part of the transmission tied to the automatic start/stop feature may be loose or missing entirely. That lets transmission fluid leak out. As the fluid drains away the transmission can stop working, and if leaking fluid reaches a hot enough source it can start a fire. Ford is replacing that part on affected vehicles. A dealer will fit a new start/stop accumulator free of charge, and this repair is not one to put off.

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is included in campaign 20V550000.
2. Contact a Ford or Lincoln dealer right away for an appointment, or call Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 (recall 20S49).
3. Have the start/stop accumulator replaced — the repair costs you nothing.

Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Edge, Transit Connect and Lincoln MKX and 2020 Escape and Lincoln Corsair vehicles. The start/stop accumulator endcap may have missing or loose bolts.
Safety risk: Missing or loose bolts on the start stop accumulator endcap could result in a transmission fluid leak and may progress to a loss of transmission function. A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of fire.
Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the start/stop accumulator, free of charge. The recall began September 23, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S49.
