Brakes that may not stop the vehicle in the normal distance are a serious crash risk; the notice does not tell owners to park the vehicle, but get it in quickly and leave extra following distance until then.

What's wrong, in plain English

The rear brake pads on these Escapes may have been made incorrectly. If the brake booster, the part that makes the brake pedal easy to press, ever stops working, the faulty pads mean the brakes do less than they should. You would have to push much harder on the pedal, and the vehicle would take a longer distance to stop. The notice says dealers will replace the front brake pads free of charge; letters were mailed in November 2025.

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls (these VINs became searchable October 13, 2025) to confirm your Escape is covered. 2. Contact your Ford dealer or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall 21C31, an expansion of recall 21V922. 3. Have the brake pads replaced at no cost.

Summary
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020 Escape vehicles. The rear brake pads may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can reduce brake function in the event of a brake booster malfunction. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems."
Safety risk
Reduced brake function can require the driver to apply more brake pedal force, and the distance required to stop the vehicle may be extended, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the front brake pads, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on November 5, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21C31. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on October 13, 2025. This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall number 21V922.
