Serious, because a side airbag that deploys incorrectly raises your chance of injury in a crash, but the notice puts no restriction on driving the car.

What's wrong, in plain English

On some 2021 BMW 430i and M440i 4 Series Convertibles, the airbag that protects your head and chest in a side crash may not inflate the way it should. The problem is in the car's software, not the airbag itself. BMW says every affected car is still sitting on dealer lots and none have been sold, so no letters are going out to owners. A dealer reprograms the software to fix it.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your car is included. 2. Call your BMW dealer, or BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, and ask for recall 21V176000. 3. Have the software update done, which is free; if you bought the car recently, confirm the dealer already did it.
