Serious for crash protection: the car drives normally, but side airbags and seatbelts may not protect you properly in a side impact, so schedule the inspection soon; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

These Mercedes models have sensors in the sides of the car that tell the airbags and seatbelts when a side impact is happening. The plugs connecting those sensors can work loose. If that happens, the side airbags and the seatbelts may react late in a side crash, or not work as designed, so people inside can be hurt worse than they should be. The dealer checks the side crash sensors and replaces any that need it, free of charge.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see whether your Mercedes is covered.
2. Contact a Mercedes-Benz dealer and reference recall 2021070032/33, or call MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
3. The dealer inspects the side impact crash sensors and replaces them as needed, at no charge.

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2021 CLS450, AMG E53, AMG CLS53, E350, E450, AMG GT43, AMG GT53, 2020 S450, S560, G550, AMG GLC63, 2020-2021 GLC300, and AMG G63 vehicles. The side crash sensor connectors may come loose, which could delay the activation of air bags and seatbelts during a side impact crash.
Safety risk
Air bags and seatbelts that don't function as intended can increase the risk of injury during a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace as necessary, the side impact crash sensors, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 3, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2021070032/33.
